1. When did you start martial arts, and what motivated you to begin?
I started practicing Taekwondo when I was six years old.
One day, I followed my older brother to his Taekwondo class, and unexpectedly, I received a compliment. That praise made me so happy that I eagerly begged my parents to let me start learning Taekwondo. That moment marked the beginning of my journey with Taekwondo.
2. What made you decide to become a instructor?
In Korea, my focus was solely on being an athlete. However, during my university years, I had the opportunity to work with students for a month as a student teacher in physical education. It was then that I felt a deep sense of fulfillment, realizing that I could positively influence student through Taekwondo.
Later, when I visited a Taekwondo school in Australia, I was inspired by the idea of sharing the Taekwondo knowledge and skills I had learned with more people. Despite the cultural and environmental differences between Korea and Australia, I wanted to show that we can come together on the common stage of Taekwondo.
3. What are your goals as a Instructor or personal aspirations?
My goal is to guide every student to transform themselves through Taekwondo. In particular, I focus on creating plans and providing systematic training to help student-athletes take a step closer to achieving their dreams and goals.
Additionally, I strive to create an environment where everyone can enjoy and find happiness in their Taekwondo practice. This is both my greatest challenge and my ultimate mission.
4. What message would you like to share with your students?
What I realized while learning Taekwondo is that it’s not just a place to learn techniques. Taekwondo is a precious space where you make friends, meet a second family, and share moments of joy and sorrow with others.
The process of growth applies to Taekwondo in the same way it does in life. Just as a baby crawls and learns to walk step by step, a strong foundation in the basics is essential to build anything on top of it.
Opportunities come only to those who are prepared. While the time and process to achieve goals may differ for each person, the key is to stay patient and keep moving forward. If you persist, you will eventually find the goals you’ve been dreaming of right in front of you.
5. What advice would you give to someone hesitating to start martial arts?
Taekwondo is not just a sport; it is a tool for connection. For me, Taekwondo has brought friends into my life and gifted me with another family.
During training, we motivated each other, sweated together in friendly competition, shared laughter during joyful moments, and offered comfort during tough times.
Don’t be afraid to express yourself through Taekwondo. Within it, you will discover genuine connection and forge new relationships.
